Grandma stared into the hearth, calling up her memories as she watched the fire dance. The children huddled closer and waited. A minute passed. Lilibeth could imagine the besieged town and the fear coursing through its inhabitants as they waited, trapped in their homes as the intruder roamed the streets. Finally, Grandma resumed the tale.
"Everyone was so afraid, children. So very afraid. The beast had destroyed the prince's villa and scattered his guard. A few guards tried to confront the Orn, but they were killed and the survivors ran into the hills with the prince. We thought we were doomed. After a terrible day and a night, a ship landed. Nobody knew who it could be." The old lady looked at her little granddaughter and smiled. "But I was like you, Lilibeth. I was curious and I wanted to see who had come. I peeked out a window and I saw her."
"Who was it?" Lilibeth answered.
"It was a woman in black dragon hide armor and a dragon hide cloak. Only the best warriors were given that stuff; it could stop bullets and lasers, at least one direct hit. And she was carrying a slayer gun. Only the best warriors were armed with those weapons. But then I noticed the cross etched into her armor, and I knew what she had to be: a Knight of the Order!"
"The Order?" Timmy asked.
"Yes, the Knights of the Order of St. Sharyn! I watched as she walked by our house. She was so quiet, I wondered if she was real. But she saw me. Her eyes were behind spectacles, but I saw her eyes and she glanced at me. I asked, "Are you going to help us?"
'"I will try, little girl,"' the knight told me. '"Be quiet, please, and stay low.'"
"Then what happened?" Lilibeth pleaded eagerly.
"The Orn came out to fight the Knight of the Order. I could see them in the square. Oh, it towered over her, but she was brave. They fought, throwing tungsten and fire at each other! The Orn hurt her, but she did not run! Then she put one perfect shot into its armor! It roared with pain and ran! The knight chased it to the beach, and there she slayed it! Word spread fast that the horror had ended, and everyone came out to thank the knight and cheer her!"
"Was she hurt bad?" Lilibeth asked with concern. She knew how dangerous Orns could be.
"Yes, the knight was hurt, but she was strong. The Emperor offered to give her the town as a reward, but Knights of the Order never asked for property or money. She did ask that we be allowed to chose our own leader, and the Emperor granted us this right. We became the first town to have a real mayor."
Lilibeth was still curious. "Did you talk to her again?"
"Yes, before she left. She said she was Lady Thel. Of course, I asked her to tell me her first name."
Lilibeth's eyes shined. "What was it?"
Grandma laughed. "You know what it was, Miss Smarty Pants!"
